You might not be aware, however, that there are some common teeth brushing habits that everyone should break if they want to improve their brushing technique. Getting Too Attached to Your Toothbrush
Have you had your toothbrush for a long time? You may not realize this, but your toothbrush should be replaced every three to four months. Do not wait to get a new toothbrush until you come in for your routine cleaning appointment. If your toothbrush’s bristles begin to fray or become broken, it’s a sign that the time has come to replace it.
Scrubbing Your Teeth
Many people use too much pressure when brushing their teeth. Using too much pressure, or scrubbing, can wear down the tooth enamel. This makes tooth decay more likely.
Brushing Too Soon After Meals
While brushing after meals is a great habit, try to wait at least 30 minutes. This is especially important if you had something acidic. Drinking water or chewing sugarless gum can help freshen your mouth a little while you wait.
Improper Toothbrush Storage
Keeping your toothbrush in a closed container like a drawer, cupboard or travel toothbrush holder isn’t a great idea. Let your toothbrush dry in the open air in an upright position.
Choosing a Toothbrush With Hard Bristles
Brushing your teeth with a hard-bristled toothbrush can wear down the tooth enamel. We suggest that you brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
